For decades, industry manufacturers have expressed that they do not have enough skilled talent to fill jobs now and in the future. In order, to be competitive, grow and help these businesses thrive they need skilled talent. The North Central Ohio Region Industry Manufacturers Workforce Alliance established the Manufacturing Career Connections (“MCC”} organization to advocate and promote careers in industry manufacturing to the community.
The catalyst behind this project is the reported shortage of semi-skilled to high-skilled workers for area industrial robotics and advanced manufacturing operations. Michael “Mac” McVey and Frank Gibson conducted a study sponsored by The Ohio State University to solve the skills-gap issue and report to a four-county region, their communities and educational institutions, so they understand the competencies that businesses are seeking. This grant funded research identified specific skills required in advanced manufacturing and shared with affected groups in a database. The grant also provided the foundation for an alliance of employers, educational institutions, economic development organizations, and other vested stakeholders.
The initial cover area of The North Central Ohio Region Industry Manufacturers Workforce Alliance included Crawford, Delaware, Hardin, Marion, Morrow, Union & Wyandot Counties and worked to convene, educate, and mobilize key stakeholders in the region to promote development of a skilled workforce.
The MCC has since merged with the North-Central Ohio Employer-Based Worker Training Partnership and has expanded its reach to include: Ashland, Crawford, Delaware, Hancock, Hardin, Holmes, Huron, Knox, Licking, Logan, Marion, Morrow, Richland, Sandusky, Seneca, Union and Wyandot counties.
The MCC seeks to impact: Industry manufacturers – their ability to find skilled talent to compete and grow; Talent – their ability to secure good jobs, provide and maintain financial stability; the Region – its ability to attract/retain companies, grow economy; the Region – their ability to attract/retain companies, grow the economy.
